Twelve Days Of Christmas

Have you ever wondered when the twelve days of Christmas are or what they mean?  BrankletsNBling and GirlieGals will be hosting a 12 Days of Christmas Sale from Dec. 1 - Dec. 12, but before the sale begins, I wanted to know more about the 12 days of Christmas history and meaning.  I decided to do a little research on the subject and what I found was very interesting. Most of us think the twelve days of Christmas are the twelve days preceding Christmas Day, however, the Twelve Days of Christmas are the festive days beginning Christmas Day. This period is also known as Christmastide and Twelvetide. The Twelfth night of Christmas is always on the evening of 5 January, but the Twelfth Day can either precede or follow the Twelfth Night according to which Christian tradition is followed.   

"The Twelve Days of Christmas" song comes from an English "memories-and-forfeits" game, in which a leader recites a verse, then each player repeats the verse, then the leader adds another verse, and so on until one player makes a mistake. The player who errs was required to pay a penalty, such as offering up a kiss or a sweet. 

Does this song have any meaning?  A bit of modern folklore claims that the song's lyrics were written as a "catechism song" to help young Catholics learn their faith.   There is no substantive evidence supporting this claim, however many Christians believe the following interpretation of the song:

Let's not forget our troops overseas serving their country away from their families this holiday season.  The Red Cross as a program called Holiday Mail for Heroes.  This program allows you to send a Christmas card to a servicemember serving overseas.  Just mail your Christmas card to:

All cards must be postmarked no later than Friday, December 9th. Cards postmarked after this date will unfortunately be returned to the sender. This deadline ensures enough time to sort and distribute cards before the holidays.  The Red Cross also requests that all cards be signed, have a generic salutation such as "Dear Service Member", cards only - no letters, do not include your email or home address (not a pen pal program), no photos, and no cards with glitter. 

This year, the Red Cross has a new option to create cards online – just select one out of four great designs and type in your personal message, and we will print the card out for you and deliver it with all of the other cards we receive. The best part is that each card only costs $1.

You can also contribute more than just cards. The Red Cross has a holiday gift catalog which lists several different contributions you can make to provide much-needed items for service members, such as phone cards and “comfort kits”.

Black Friday Sales

The biggest shopping weekend of the year is only a week away!!  This year, rather than spend the day or weekend stuck in traffic or long lines, try doing your holiday sale shopping online at Etsy.  If you're like me, you may not even have the opportunity to go out and brave the stores.  With three little ones at home and a husband who is currently deployed to Afghanistan, just the though of dragging my crew to the stores on the busiest shopping day of the year is an absolute nightmare for all involved!!  Kids do not like shopping, but more than that, they really hate waiting in lines!!

Looking for a way to save money this Holiday season? Many sellers on Etsy will be hosting Holiday sales. Etsy is a great place to find a variety of handmade and vintage items from photography to jewelry to paper crafts to needlework.  There are so many talented artisans on Etsy that make unique things you cannot get in stores.  It is also very easy to shop at Etsy as it's online - no fighting the crowds or waiting in line this season.  I love online shopping because I have three kids who do not enjoy shopping!!  Our Holiday Shopping Guide has a great sampling of Etsy shops with great gifts for anyone on your Christmas list.
